The Art Of Selecting A Safe Water Bottle
63
Most of us don’t put too much thought into the bottles that house our store-bought water. But not all water bottles are created equally. You should take the time to make sure that you select only safe water bottles.
You may not consider a water bottle to be much of a danger to the health of you and your children. But you might be surprised to learn that not all water bottles are safe water bottles.
In fact, some of the most common water bottles are the least safe. For instance, you may purchase bottled water from your local gas station on the way home from work. These bottles, which you can also find on grocery store shelves, are made out of polyethylene terephthalate, or PET, plastic.
There are several problems with these bottles. First, they have been proven to leak chemicals after repeated use. They can also provide a home for bacteria, which can easily grow inside any cracks in the bottle. These bottles are also bad for the environment because most people use them just once before throwing them away. These are definitely not safe water bottles!
A better alternative for the environment are plastic bottles that you re-use and fill with tap water or filtered water. However, it’s not entirely clear if these should be considered safe water bottles, either.
Again, these bottles can leak chemicals, most notably Bisphenol A, better known as BPA, a synthetic hormone that may cause prostate cancer. Again, this means that these are not exactly safe water bottles, either.
If you’re looking for a safe water bottle to bring along when you’re hiking or biking, there are far better alternatives than either disposable or re-usable plastic bottles. The first, is an aluminum water bottle that you can use over and over again. You’ve probably seen these in stores: They are usually tall and skinny, and come in several different colors. Best of all, because they are not made of plastic, you don’t have to worry about any leaking chemicals. And because you reuse them, you won’t be harming the environment by filling up our landfills unnecessarily.
The best choice in a safe water bottle, though, may be reusable stainless steel water bottles. Stainless steel is tough and durable, and is very difficult to crack or break. This keeps bacteria, which like to form in any cracks or crevices in a water bottle, from growing. Stainless steel water bottles also don’t leak any chemicals. Again, these bottles are usually tall or skinny, though you can find them in a wide variety of sizes and styles. Remember, too, that a reusable stainless steel bottle is not only a safe water bottle, it’s one that’s friendly to the environment.
